Dr. Julian Whitaker began practicing medicine after graduating from Emory University Medical School in Atlanta in 1970. However, it was after that, while completing his residency at the University of California in San Francisco, that he had an experience treating a young woman with a sprained ankle that changed his life. While talking to her, he realized that physicians never actually study health or teach their patients how to acheive it.

From that point, Dr. Whitaker starting studying nutrition and natural therapies. Eventually, he founded the California Orthomolecular Medical Society with the help of two-time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling Ph.D. (who actually coined the term orthomolecular medicine). In 1979, Dr. Whitaker started the Whitaker Wellness Institute Medical Clinic and has treated more than 25,000 patients since.
